I would like to focus this article on “Dripping”.
Dripping, a modern technique, is one of those techniques that easily gives you the impression that can never be expressed with a brush.
What is Dripping (Blowdown)?
Dripping is a technique of expressing by dropping or pouring paint pigments onto a support without using a brush, or by blowing the dropped paint pigments with a straw to add movement.
Dripping Tips
Dripping is one of the modern techniques, which includes sputter deposition, decalcomania, marbling, and other techniques that use accidental shapes and colors to express a picture.
Dripping Effects and Attractiveness
The two images above are part of a painting by an autistic girl named Iris Grace Harmshaw (age 5), who lives in England, using dripping and other techniques.
This girl started drawing to treat her autism, which led her to become an artist.
What is your impression of the image below?
How to make dripping
Now I will explain how to do the dripping, albeit briefly.
Here are the tools you need to prepare first
・paint pigments
・Brush (the thicker the brush, the larger the droplet)
・Straw
・Supporting material such as drawing paper or canvas
・Container for dissolved paint pigments (plastic bottle lids are recommended)
Helpful items if available
・Newspaper to prevent paint from splattering around
・Container for washing brushes
・Wet tissues that can be quickly wiped up when splashed in unexpected places
・Clothes that can get dirty
・Syringe that can be used to suck up paint from a container and drop it on a screen, or to suck up paint from a screen
For me, syringe was very useful.
This time, two colors of paint (yellow and blue)
If available,
Dissolve a little more yellow (in a dry state)
Use a syringe to suck up an appropriate amount of the paint,
or let the brush absorb as much of the paint as possible.
The difference between the effect of a brush and a dropper is as follows
・It is difficult to aim where it will fall, even if you are used to it, although you can use a brush to throw it at the screen.
(The unpredictability is good)
・If you throw a brush at it, it will leave a momentum mark in the paint.
・For syringe, it’s difficult to throw it on.
・For syringe, it’s like falling, so you can roughly predict it.
When the amount in the dropper is about to run out,
The fine droplets scatter as they are pushed out vigorously.
Here, before the paint dries,
Hastily blow on it with a straw from various directions.
Isn’t it easy?
In the painting above, flowers and small leaves of wildflowers are painted using the dripping technique.

What I learned from dripping
As with many of the techniques I have studied, if you acquire the skills and knowledge, this drooping technique will be a powerful advantage for you and me.
For those who think their own drawings are a bit stiff (I am talking about myself), this technique of using coincidence is an interesting item.
This technique can be effective in situations such as splashing waves, grass and trees, fireworks, and outer space.
This concludes the explanation of dripping.
